Tell me if you still think this is funny: when one goes to Starbucks and orders coffee, one has to decide from a slew of blends, then what size, then if we want it sweet (with brown or white sugar or equal), then if we want it with milk that is whole, low fat or half & half! It is only a cup of coffee, for goodness sake! =)
But then again, as Nora Ephron also says, Starbucks offers us an illusion that we are in control of our lives, even for just our coffee. LOL! =)
 | can i have a hot cafe latte, venti, non fat with one splenda...there! that is what i usually order or....the drip of the day, non fat milk, 2 splendas....funny nga, kasi feeling ko i am trying to control kuno my coffee concoction....hay!! |
| Basta ako chocolate, ayos na. Walang moment of indecision. : ) |
 | Very true, Ms G, funny nga! Lalo na when they started to ask ng kung anik-anik eh what you only wanted is makahigop na kagad ng masarap na kape, pantanggal antok dahil sa sobrang busog :) |
 | he he he! Thank God I don't have this dilemma, I don't drink coffee po kasi!^_^ |
| Ha Awel?! Hindi ka nagmana sa daddy mo, na nagmana sa daddy namin, super hilig sa kape? Ano nga kaya kung buhay pa si Lolo Hugo mo? Palagi kayang nasa Starbucks? |
 | VERY funny because I personally think Starbucks coffee sucks. It's ultramagneticpop overrated. Wala sa kalingkingan ng kapeng barako. |
| Eh hindi ko mawawari Faith. Hindi kasi ako nagkakape. Baka mas masarap pa ang sa Figaro. |
 | Anything but Starbucks coffee. =) |
| I go to Starbucks for the hot choco, but when they have walnut brownie, I take hot tea. |
 | In fairness to Starbucks, which is the nearest coffee shop to my old (6750) and new (RCBC Plaza) office, I used to order their rhumba and cappuccinno (if may business meeting kasi libre). And if I may explain myself, their coffee tastes like gatas na nilagyan ng kape which I don't like because I like my coffee strong. I tried several of their drinks (I keep an open mind) pero each and every time I end up disappointed and did not enjoy my drink. That's on top of the price which clears the wallet by a hundred pesos or so. Yun lang. Iba-iba kasi tayo ng panlasa. =) |
 | 3 in one mixes are fine with me... kung wala, i stick to my fool-proof concoction which i posted somewhere recently... 1 stick sachet of nescafe, 2 packets of coffeemate and 1 1/2 packets of sugar. yummy, the real secret is in the water... dapat piping hot when it hits the granules para ma unlock ang real taste...slurp! |
| Kung choco lang, sa Jollibee talaga ako. : ) |
 | Hay naku...yes indeed. One time at Starbucks, guy ordered his regular coffee took about 10-15 sachets of Splenda and just poured it into his drink. Then another older guy would buy his usual iced coffee, dump all the ice in the trash can and added so much milk into his drink. Pero minsan rip off ang Starbucks...mahal na tapos panay foam lang naman ang nasa drink. Kaya ako I prefer Coffee Bean. |
 | namamahalan ako sa starbucks.....:)
*hindi ako siguro ganong ka-addict sa kape* =) |
 | gnglucy wrote on Aug 26, '07, edited on Aug 26, '07 we have Starbucks here pero not very popular kasi naman mas marami ang italian coffee shops dito so a few Starbucks chains have already closed down. i'm an occasional coffee drinker but i'm very much into hot chocolate with marshmallow on top accompanied by a blueberry muffin =) |
 | i love coffee very much kahit na alam kong it stains your teeth at madalas hindi maganda sa breath. pag summer di ako imiinom ng hot coffee (mainit na kasi) kaya the whole summer season ice coffee ako sa umaga 2 glasses pa!! Merienda ko same thing din. I seldom go to Starbucks masyado ng commercialize mahal na ang dami pang yelo sa order mong mocha coffee. Daddy loves ice coffee too tuwang tuwa siya pag ginagawan ko siya noon. |
| i prefer Teh Tarik (Indian pulled tea : strong black tea with condensed milk) which we can buy at any hawkers than Starbucks coffee. tastes a whole cuppa better. S$0.90 lang compared to Starbucks na almost S$6.00... you pay for branded papercups. and all you need to say when you order is, "one Teh Tarik, please." whereas Starbucks and Coffee Bean, "one latte, hot, tall, with soya milk, dine in, and yeah, they ask your name to mark the cup. that i got fed up saying "Helene" as it always came out Ailene, Elaine, Helen, whatever near sounding names... " but never Helene. so i always ended up sorting which latte is mine. i'm fed up spelling my name... so i resort to naming myself somebody else's name to cut the long order a bit shorter. you can imagine how stressed i am sipping Starbucks or Coffee Bean. and i paid for it!!! |
 | blend 45 all the way. heheh kidding. i dont do coffee but i dig the coffeehouse vibe. seriously, i think its the lighting and the interiors. people should pool the money they save not going to starbucks and hire an interior designer =) |
 | ellafitz wrote on Aug 26, '07, edited on Aug 26, '07 hey somebody mentioned hot choc and tea!
jollibee's is really thick and accessible too. theres one around the corner near my house. always good with malasado eggs and the morning paper.
tea with condensed milk (cold for me) is good with a samosa and makes me feel like a character on monsoon wedding |
 | Starbucks is simply good marketing that made the two founders from Seattle into billionaires. They started the business from a small nondescript coffee shop in an old building in Seattle, right across from the Pike Place Public Market. The original store is still open for business. In fact coffee lovers from everywhere go there just to drink coffee "where it all started" - myself included. It was just perfect timing because in those days there were no coffee shops like Starbucks. Now there are quite a few, like Seattle's Best, Second Cup, and Blenz. |
15 to 20 cups a day. |
 | hehe, ako lab ko ang starbucks. never disappoints me because wherever branch i go, consistent. cafe americano with half and half always puts me in a good mood :) |
 | when you go to eat in a restaurant, it's great to punctuate the end of the meal with a good cup of brewed coffee...Here in the US, at least in the major cities, it is foreseen that soon, it will not be enough to just ask for plain ol' brewed coffee...because of the stiff competition, restaurants will soon specify WHAT KIND of brewed coffee you prefer. So the starbucks experience (as well as others like Peet's, Figaro, etc) is actually educating us with how the future will be...they even say that, next only to oil, coffee is the second most consumed commodity in the whole world. So, we better start getting used to it. (even if it gets you to oftentimes say, "Ano ba yan, ang arte naman...!) "Miss, penge nga ng Barako..."

 | gwiz wrote on Aug 27, '07 Just like they say that Henry Sy is into the space leasing business (note: not real estate, hehe) and not in the department store or retail business, Starbucks is not in the food business. It is also in the space leasing business. Why? The reason Starbucks coffee is sooo expensive is that they have calculated the cost of the space per minute or hour and have inputed this into the pricing of their drinks. They market the space by making this simple act of coffee drinking into an elaborate ritual that people would be willing to pay premium rates for. LOL! |
 | gwiz wrote on Aug 27, '07 I have a story that you might find funny or sad, depending on whether you are a Starbucks fan or not:
Our eldest son, Zach, used to have meetings in Starbucks. Our driver, Caloy, would often drive for him and when he did, Zach would just give him money for his meal instead of tagging him along into the shop. (Kasi if it was only family and not a business meeting, we usually bring the driver to have his meal with us.) One time, Zach decided to go see a movie before going home. So, he gave Caloy money for a late snack. (Caloy said he didn't want to see the movie. Our dirvers are like family, you see.) After the movie, Zach asked Caloy if he had eaten. Caloy sheepishly says, "Ang mahal pala sa Starbucks. Kape lang naubos na yung pera ko." He was probably so intrigued by this shop that people flocked to in droves. Curiosity drained his pocket, LOL! |
 | ay totoo BNK. when i was in seattle, that was what i told a friend...bring me to Pike Place and i just want to have coffee in the original starbucks. see pic...curious lang talaga... |
 | ay sorry gwiz ang laki ng pic...lagot ako kay jack.... |
 | not far behind in good coffee is figaro...sarap pa ng pasta ala carlo |
| As the point out in management schools, it is not the coffee but the experience that you buy. They pioneered in the home feel, the sofa that makes customers, as some of you observed, linger. Although, if you trace where the best coffeee beans in the world go, Starbucks has cornered them including the futures. |
 | *sips green tea frappe* -> which is what I buy in Starbucks if ever mapadpad ako don...
mas feel ko san mig na 3-in-one satchet, lagyan ng washed brown sugar and milk (either powdered goat milk, Alpine evap or any other fresh milk nasa ref ko at that time)...
|
 | gwiz wrote on Aug 27, '07 so i resort to naming myself somebody else's name Our daughter Pika naman takes the opportunity to make herself called by the name she likes: she always gives the name Nicole, hehe. Pero tutoo yan, Helene, nakakapikon when they do not get your name correctly. |
 | Ms. G...maybe its an opportunity na rin na we use names na medyo grabeng unique...na everybody will look for the customer whenever your unique name is called....oh..I dunno..how about SexyBaby, Flower, Bubblegum (baka shortened to Gum na to pagsulat), Pickles, or...... |
 | gwiz wrote on Aug 27, '07 ..na everybody will look for the customer whenever your unique name is called... Waaah, panalo itong idea mong ito, Cat! Sige, isip tayo ng mga pangalan. Then report natin kung ano ang nangyari. =) |
 | Pag nagawi ka dito pasyal uli tayo sa original Starbucks. Treat ko. |
 | sige Ms. G...tapos with video sana...parang kuhang-kuha ang reaction ng mga tao......Dear Kuya Eddie...itago mo na lang ako sa pangalang..Madame Butterfly..hehehe...'la lang...I missed dinner kaya walang linear progression tong thoughts ko ngayon... |

 | cyfunk wrote on Aug 27, '07, edited on Aug 27, '07 I prefer going to figaro for my client meetings unless my client would prefer starbucks or there is no figaro in the area. Madalas din kasi, ang galing at strategic ang puwesto ng Starbucks....I would much rather help the Filipino coffee growers, sa tutoo lang. Ad as you said Meann, masarap siya... meron pang Barako (anobayan, kanina pa...wehehehe) |
 | SexyBaby, Flower, Bubblegum (baka shortened to Gum na to pagsulat), Pickles, or...... hahaha, Cat, ang kinky naman nito... May kilala nga ako, ang laki talaga ng hang-up, we went to Starbucks (or was it Seattle's Best, San Francisco Coffee, etc one time) ang gulat ko when she gave the name "Gina" to the barista. I said, "Sinong Gina? E hindi ka naman GIna!" "E ayaw kong isinisigaw yung name ko in public!" |
 | cyfunk wrote on Aug 27, '07, edited on Aug 27, '07 My father-in-law is in the coffee manufacturing business (the husband of her sister started Commonwealth Foods, makers of Cafe Puro). One time, we went to Starbucks while waiting for a someone, we told the barista that we wanted to drink out of a mug...When it was served to us, my father-in-law who is always very nice, this time chided the barista politely:"Excuse me, but you do not serve 'good' coffee this expensive in a cold mug. Please take this back and warm my mug, for I want my coffee really hot. Thank you." Oo nga, the pleasure of drinking coffee is in a lot of things - it should definitely be an experience. |
 | Naku si daddy...weird...magpapatimpla ng mainit na kape and he will let it stand for HOURS tsaka iinumin...eeekkkss. |
| Waaah, panalo itong idea mong ito, Cat! Sige, isip tayo ng mga pangalan. Then report natin kung ano ang nangyari. =) game ako dyan! sige let's do it. this will be funny muahahahaha! |
| I think I read about this when I researched things to do and eat in Singapore...sadly I never got to taste this... hi Cat. next time you come to S'pore, beep me... will treat you very good Teh Tarik ;)>
if you wanna try pulling the tea yourself, try it out with just warm water first. and use triple the tea cup capacity so it won't spill. and you really have to use condensed milk. coz sugar and milk will taste differently. actually, they sell two kinds of condensed milk here in S'pore. one is exactly the same condensed milk we have sa Pinas, very thick. the second one is what they call "Sweetener" which is condensed milk but half the thickness of our Pinas condensed milk. and this is what they use for Teh Tarik. so if you're using the Pinas condensed milk, use less. |
 | try brewed coffee with a small amount of amareto. ssaaarrrappp! kakaiba ang lasa parang may halong brandy. |
 | Mag NescaPWE nalang tayong lahat! |
 | cyfunk wrote on Aug 28, '07, edited on Aug 28, '07 gatas na nilagyan ng kape Faith, caffe' macchiato yun...Italians describe it as coffee "stained" with foamed milk on top.. Meron ding latte macchiato, pero baliktad naman: it is milk na 'stained' by a shot of espresso. di ba, iba-iba ang treatment, like may caffe' lungo (yung kapeng binantuan ng tubig, so 'pinahaba') caffe' latte (espresso and milk)...Caffè corretto (a shot of espresso "corrected" with a shot of liquor, like brandy, etc). Etc.
Dapat ata sa yo, Faith, espresso, double shot. Yung sa tapang, puedeng tumayo ang kutsarita. |
 | to skyriver911/Helene G - thanks! pwamis ha? it would be cool to visit Singapore again....last time para akong babysitter sa parents ko hehehe...pero we were able to visit some friends..di nga lang lahat...
ok...will try it first without the acrobatics..hehehe...walang pull muna at medyo accident prone ako sa mga maiinit na tubig and sharp objects...mahilig ako sa Milkmaid when I was younger so I will definitely try this kc I have never had tea before with condensed milk...
|
 | mmm...in the mood ako for strong coffee, tapos dip ko yung broas....yummy....
ay nakow...2 am na naman pala..kaya nasa food mood ako... |
 | They don't call out customers' names here. Siguro sa Pilipinas lang yan. |
 | cyfunk wrote on Aug 28, '07, edited on Aug 28, '07 If I may say so...Helene is fantastic at selling Singapore, she can get crazy-wild-and-wonderful showing you around ...Dapat nga may bayad na yang sister ko na yan sa gobyerno! LOL |
 | Hello Gwiz. Medyo naka-nakaw ako ng sandali (parang title ng sine), dito sa affliction ko. Reur funny coffee story, all I can say is that "may angkop na kamot sa iba'ibang kati." Starbucks is trying to provide all the answers to many needs, perceived or otherwise, kaya ang gulo. It's easier for customer to order based on a decision tree. |
| Simply lang ang akin. Hugo the Horrible. |
| well, I am unsure if it will be shockign sa inyo dyan sa Singapore...seems to me I heard that some bars there (for liquor) also do that sort of thing?ok lang coffee..pero what if it were cocktail drinks? e.g. "orgasm for Gina","bj for Eva"..whatever... well if you will go to Coffee Bean and say such kinky and funny names with straight face, i'm sure that will shock 'em muahahaha! |
| If I may say so...Helene is fantastic at selling Singapore, she can get crazy-wild-and-wonderful showing you around ...Dapat nga may bayad na yang sister ko na yan sa gobyerno! LOL thanks sis Choie. yeah S'pore Tourism Board owes me loads na!!! |
| "Excuse me, but you do not serve 'good' coffee this expensive in a cold mug. Please take this back and warm my mug, for I want my coffee really hot. Thank you." not only that they serve coffee in cold mug... majority of coffeehouse serves separate milk flat cold. i hate that. once you poured it on their not so hot black coffee, you'll end up drinking blahhhh!!! that's why i would request 'em to warm the milk ;)
Cafe Puro is really good. though when we went home last December, Islaw and i tried to find some in supermarkets, nada. or maybe we just can't find it. hahahha that means poor positioning in the shelf. you must tell that to Uncle Jun.
|
 | do you know that starbucks came out with a leaflet or was it a booklet...on how to order your coffee...like state the size of your order, the kind, hot of cold, dacaf or not, what kind of cream, what kind of sweetener, any add ons, ...hay oo nga...kung first timer ka..parang ma o overwhelm ka sa way to order your starbucks...pero sa sanay na...kahit nakapikit pa! hahaha! |
 | cyfunk wrote on Aug 30, '07, edited on Aug 30, '07 but never Helene. sobrang OC ka naman kung i-spell mo pa for them, LOL |
| sobrang OC ka naman kung i-spell mo pa for them, LOL shameful to say... i did. several times. now i stopped. and just say whatever names come to my head. sometimes "H". muahahahaha!
hey Choie... will see Iso later tonight ;) |
| I can't imagine drinking this - sobrang tamis, natalo na ang lasa ng kape. oh coffee with condensed milk .... that's common here in S'pore. they call, it Kopi C while the coffee without milk is Kopi O. and surprisingly, it's not that sweet (they mix condensed milk but half the thickness of our condensada version) and you won't lose the coffee taste as they use very strong black coffee like barako.
and hello bananaking. naki singit lang ako hehehe.
|
 | sorry ayaw lumabas pic...but at least i told you some branches..sorry di ko alam kung meron sa makati... |
