for everyone
Tell me if you still think this is funny: when one goes to Starbucks and orders coffee, one has to decide from a slew of blends, then what size, then if we want it sweet (with brown or white sugar or equal), then if we want it with milk that is whole, low fat or half & half! It is only a cup of coffee, for goodness sake! =)

But then again, as Nora Ephron also says, Starbucks offers us an illusion that we are in control of our lives, even for just our coffee. LOL! =)

VERY funny because I personally think Starbucks coffee sucks. It's ultramagneticpop overrated. Wala sa kalingkingan ng kapeng barako.

In fairness to Starbucks, which is the nearest coffee shop to my old (6750) and new (RCBC Plaza) office, I used to order their rhumba and cappuccinno (if may business meeting kasi libre). And if I may explain myself, their coffee tastes like gatas na nilagyan ng kape which I don't like because I like my coffee strong. I tried several of their drinks (I keep an open mind) pero each and every time I end up disappointed and did not enjoy my drink. That's on top of the price which clears the wallet by a hundred pesos or so. Yun lang. Iba-iba kasi tayo ng panlasa. =)

3 in one mixes are fine with me... kung wala, i stick to my fool-proof concoction which i posted somewhere recently... 1 stick sachet of nescafe, 2 packets of coffeemate and 1 1/2 packets of sugar. yummy, the real secret is in the water... dapat piping hot when it hits the granules para ma unlock ang real taste...slurp!

Hay naku...yes indeed. One time at Starbucks, guy ordered his regular coffee took about 10-15 sachets of Splenda and just poured it into his drink. Then another older guy would buy his usual iced coffee, dump all the ice in the trash can and added so much milk into his drink. Pero minsan rip off ang Starbucks...mahal na tapos panay foam lang naman ang nasa drink. Kaya ako I prefer Coffee Bean.

we have Starbucks here pero not very popular kasi naman mas marami ang italian coffee shops dito so a few Starbucks chains have already closed down. i'm an occasional coffee drinker but i'm very much into hot chocolate with marshmallow on top accompanied by a blueberry muffin =)

i love coffee very much kahit na alam kong it stains your teeth at madalas hindi maganda sa breath. pag summer di ako imiinom ng hot coffee (mainit na kasi) kaya the whole summer season ice coffee ako sa umaga 2 glasses pa!! Merienda ko same thing din. I seldom go to Starbucks masyado ng commercialize mahal na ang dami pang yelo sa order mong mocha coffee. Daddy loves ice coffee too tuwang tuwa siya pag ginagawan ko siya noon.

i prefer Teh Tarik (Indian pulled tea : strong black tea with condensed milk) which we can buy at any hawkers than Starbucks coffee. tastes a whole cuppa better. S$0.90 lang compared to Starbucks na almost S$6.00... you pay for branded papercups. and all you need to say when you order is, "one Teh Tarik, please." whereas Starbucks and Coffee Bean, "one latte, hot, tall, with soya milk, dine in, and yeah, they ask your name to mark the cup. that i got fed up saying "Helene" as it always came out Ailene, Elaine, Helen, whatever near sounding names... " but never Helene. so i always ended up sorting which latte is mine. i'm fed up spelling my name... so i resort to naming myself somebody else's name to cut the long order a bit shorter. you can imagine how stressed i am sipping Starbucks or Coffee Bean. and i paid for it!!!

hey somebody mentioned hot choc and tea!

jollibee's is really thick and accessible too. theres one around the corner near my house. always good with malasado eggs and the morning paper.

tea with condensed milk (cold for me) is good with a samosa and makes me feel like a character on monsoon wedding

Starbucks is simply good marketing that made the two founders from Seattle into billionaires. They started the business from a small nondescript coffee shop in an old building in Seattle, right across from the Pike Place Public Market. The original store is still open for business. In fact coffee lovers from everywhere go there just to drink coffee "where it all started" - myself included. It was just perfect timing because in those days there were no coffee shops like Starbucks. Now there are quite a few, like Seattle's Best, Second Cup, and Blenz.

when you go to eat in a restaurant, it's great to punctuate the end of the meal with a good cup of brewed coffee...Here in the US, at least in the major cities, it is foreseen that soon, it will not be enough to just ask for plain ol' brewed coffee...because of the stiff competition, restaurants will soon specify WHAT KIND of brewed coffee you prefer. So the starbucks experience (as well as others like Peet's, Figaro, etc) is actually educating us with how the future will be...they even say that, next only to oil, coffee is the second most consumed commodity in the whole world. So, we better start getting used to it. (even if it gets you to oftentimes say, "Ano ba yan, ang arte naman...!)

Just like they say that Henry Sy is into the space leasing business (note: not real estate, hehe) and not in the department store or retail business, Starbucks is not in the food business. It is also in the space leasing business. Why? The reason Starbucks coffee is sooo expensive is that they have calculated the cost of the space per minute or hour and have inputed this into the pricing of their drinks. They market the space by making this simple act of coffee drinking into an elaborate ritual that people would be willing to pay premium rates for. LOL!

I have a story that you might find funny or sad, depending on whether you are a Starbucks fan or not:

Our eldest son, Zach, used to have meetings in Starbucks. Our driver, Caloy, would often drive for him and when he did, Zach would just give him money for his meal instead of tagging him along into the shop. (Kasi if it was only family and not a business meeting, we usually bring the driver to have his meal with us.) One time, Zach decided to go see a movie before going home. So, he gave Caloy money for a late snack. (Caloy said he didn't want to see the movie. Our dirvers are like family, you see.) After the movie, Zach asked Caloy if he had eaten. Caloy sheepishly says, "Ang mahal pala sa Starbucks. Kape lang naubos na yung pera ko." He was probably so intrigued by this shop that people flocked to in droves. Curiosity drained his pocket, LOL!

As the point out in management schools, it is not the coffee but the experience that you buy. They pioneered in the home feel, the sofa that makes customers, as some of you observed, linger. Although, if you trace where the best coffeee beans in the world go, Starbucks has cornered them including the futures.

My father-in-law is in the coffee manufacturing business (the husband of her sister started Commonwealth Foods, makers of Cafe Puro). One time, we went to Starbucks while waiting for a someone, we told the barista that we wanted to drink out of a mug...When it was served to us, my father-in-law who is always very nice, this time chided the barista politely:"Excuse me, but you do not serve 'good' coffee this expensive in a cold mug. Please take this back and warm my mug, for I want my coffee really hot. Thank you."
Oo nga, the pleasure of drinking coffee is in a lot of things - it should definitely be an experience.

hi Cat. next time you come to S'pore, beep me... will treat you very good Teh Tarik ;)>

if you wanna try pulling the tea yourself, try it out with just warm water first. and use triple the tea cup capacity so it won't spill. and you really have to use condensed milk. coz sugar and milk will taste differently. actually, they sell two kinds of condensed milk here in S'pore. one is exactly the same condensed milk we have sa Pinas, very thick. the second one is what they call "Sweetener" which is condensed milk but half the thickness of our Pinas condensed milk. and this is what they use for Teh Tarik. so if you're using the Pinas condensed milk, use less.

Faith, caffe' macchiato yun...Italians describe it as coffee "stained" with foamed milk on top.. Meron ding latte macchiato, pero baliktad naman: it is milk na 'stained' by a shot of espresso.
di ba, iba-iba ang treatment, like may caffe' lungo (yung kapeng binantuan ng tubig, so 'pinahaba') caffe' latte (espresso and milk)...Caffè corretto (a shot of espresso "corrected" with a shot of liquor, like brandy, etc). Etc.

Dapat ata sa yo, Faith, espresso, double shot. Yung sa tapang, puedeng tumayo ang kutsarita.

Hello Gwiz. Medyo naka-nakaw ako ng sandali (parang title ng sine), dito sa affliction ko. Reur funny coffee story, all I can say is that "may angkop na kamot sa iba'ibang kati." Starbucks is trying to provide all the answers to many needs, perceived or otherwise, kaya ang gulo. It's easier for customer to order based on a decision tree.

not only that they serve coffee in cold mug... majority of coffeehouse serves separate milk flat cold. i hate that. once you poured it on their not so hot black coffee, you'll end up drinking blahhhh!!! that's why i would request 'em to warm the milk ;)

oh coffee with condensed milk .... that's common here in S'pore. they call, it Kopi C
while the coffee without milk is Kopi O. and surprisingly, it's not that sweet (they mix condensed milk but half the thickness of our condensada version) and you won't lose the coffee taste as they use very strong black coffee like barako.
